The financial crisis that came at the doorsteps of the USA and then the world somewhere around 2007-08 has given new fodder to Hollywood. As time passes, historic events start to look more exciting to be woven into movies, and so even in 2015, we find newer movies being made on the events that rocked the world about seven years back. The difference though with The Big Short is that it does not aim to paint a doomsday picture of what happened then, but charts the story of a few guys who smartly benefited from the economic crash. Yeah, some guys did make money! Interesting personalities, smart people, ones who could figure out what was headed our way. The first trailer of The Big Short makes the movie look promising indeed!
What’s the plot: The movie is based on the book of the same name by financial journalist and author Michael Lewis whose work has been turned into fascinating movies in the past, viz. The Blind Side (2009) and Moneyball (2011). His book The Big Short of 2010 talks about the origins of the financial crisis and then goes on to chart the journey of hedge fund managers, traders and even an ex-neurologist, who saw the writing on the wall and took a bet against the market, eventually making money when the credit bubble burst. Its movie adaptation would follow the same path.
Who’s in the cast: The Big Short has to have the most thrilling ensemble cast of this year. Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Brad Pitt & Ryan Gosling! Read it in any order and it will continue to sound equally exciting. Now add more, Melissa Leo and Marisa Tomei. You will have to pinch yourself to believe this is true.
Who’s directing the movie: With such a serious financial topic in hand, you would have expected someone with experience in similar-toned movies to be given the directing duties. Definitely, not someone who prefers comedy movies over anything else. You can see where I am going with this, can’t you? The studio has in fact roped in a director known for his work in the comedy genre, Adam Mckay. In the news last year for opting out of Marvel’s Ant-Man due to creative differences, McKay’s past works include Step Brothers, The Other Guys, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues. A step into a more drama oriented movie would be an interesting challenge for McKay.
Where to watch the trailer: Right here! You may take some time to recognise the stars in the movie for they have gone through an amazing physical transformation. With a December release planned, Paramount is betting on Oscar buzz to be generated for this film. Looking at the initial promos, it just might!
The Big Short is scheduled to release in the USA on December 23, 2015.
