The Marvel cinematic world is about to get bigger in 2015. Just after the Avengers have another showdown to conclude Phase II, Ant-Man will usher in Phase III for Marvel. It’s a new hero, new beginnings, new things on offer. The Marvel world is already so big, and yet not big enough. Last year Guardians of the Galaxy was easily and successfully absorbed in it, which leaves me with little doubt that the tiniest of the Marvel heroes, Ant-Man, too would find a good enough place here. The buzz that the first trailer has created is a sign of that happening.
Who is Ant-Man: In the Marvel comics, the first Ant-Man was Hank Pym, a brilliant scientist who invented a substance that allowed him to change his size. After Hank Pym, it was Scott Lang, a thief, who took over the Ant-Man costume. In the movie, both Hank Pym and Scott Lang feature, and the way the trailer develops, it is easy to see that Hank Pym will handover the chance to Scott Lang to be Ant-Man. “This is your chance to earn that look in your daughter’s eyes. To become the hero that she already thinks you are.”
Who are the actors in the film: Paul Rudd as Scott Lang will lead the awesome cast of Ant-Man. Veteran actor Michael Douglas is playing the role of the scientist Hank Pym. Correy Stoll will be the bad guy for the film. Yellowjacket. Judy Greer is onboard to play Scott Lang’s wife. And then there is Evangeline Lilly playing the daughter of Hank Pym. Not much about her has been revealed in the trailer, but it would be interesting to see in which direction her story moves, for in the comics her character had a negative shade, though there is much talk that she in fact might be the future Wasp (another superhero and fellow Avenger who was the partner of Hank Pym in the comics; the rumours are afloat mainly because the hairstyle of Evengeline Lilly in the movie trailer resembles a lot like Wasp).
Who is directing the film: It was meant to be Edgar Wright, but we all know how that crumbled. “Differences in their vision of the film” is the official reason behind the parting. It was subsequently handed over to Peyton Reed who is seeing the film through. Reed has worked on light-hearted comedy films before like Yes Man and The Break-Up, so Ant-Man would be a bit of a challenge for him. It is quite likely though that Marvel wants to pursue the origins of their latest superhero in a lighter vein, for which Peter Reed might be the perfect man.
Where to watch the trailer: Right here! The trailer has a serious tone though, which many may not have expected. There is a lot of course that has not been told yet, so we still have much more to learn. Nonetheless, this trailer gives you the shot you all would have been waiting for — Ant-Man riding an ant!
Ant-Man is scheduled to release in the USA on July 17, 2015.
