No one, and I mean no one, has been part of as many Marvel character based movies as Stan Lee, the creator / co-creator of most of these famous superheroes. In October 2013, I had compiled a list of Stan Lee cameos, beginning with 2000’s X-Men, which ran upto a total of 17 cameos. To catch up with that old list, click here. Since then, the comic veteran, who is 92 years old now, has continued to be an unstoppable force in the superhero world. I have updated the list of our very own ‘Cameo Man’ beginning from Thor: The Dark World to this year’s Ant-Man. As always, a Stan Lee cameo continues to be fun!
Thor: The Dark World (2013)
This cameo comes as quite a surprise. We see Dr. Selveg ranting and raving about cosmic abnormalities with a pair of shoes in his hands. The camera then switches to his audience. And guess what, it is a mental ward with Stan Lee right there in the middle of things. When Selveg asks for any questions, Lee replies, “Yeah, can I have my shoe back?” Stan Lee has his priorities right!
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
By now, Stan Lee’s cameos were carrying some comic lines too, making his appearance all the more memorable. Something similar is the case with Captain America: The Winter Solider where Stan Lee plays a security guard of the Smithsonian Institute, who finds the suit of Captain America stolen (by Captain America himself) and quips, “Oh man, I am so fired.” C’mon Stan, even Cap could not fire you!
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Stan Lee is amongst the crowd at Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy’s graduation ceremony where he almost spots Peter Parker with his Spider-Man mask on. Eh, but wasn’t Lee the first to know about this secret!?
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Stan Lee still has the moves as he showcases them in Guardians of the Galaxy comfortably chatting up a young woman as the raccoon Rocket spies on him. Some people do not age, eh!?
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
A highly awaited movie! A highly awaited cameo! Avengers: Age of Ultron got the whole gang of superheroes back and in one epic scene it had their creator sit with them and share a drink. But you did not expect it to be that normal, did you? Stan Lee plays a war veteran who cares little for Thor’s warnings about Asgardian liquor not being made for mortal men. Cut to the next scene and Stan Lee is being carried away in a heavily drunken state muttering “Excelsior!” Now, even Stan has his limits!

Here Stan Lee has a brief but funny cameo as a bartender towards the end of the movie, who features in one of the elongated stories that Luis keeps telling the group. The entire bit is quite hilarious, and Stan Lee’s appearance would definitely make you jump on your seat and shout out “There he is!”
Marvel has begun with its Phase-III and Stan Lee is part of it once more. Weirdly, he continues to be left out of the X-Men series, having had cameos in only the first and third films of the franchise. I love his explanation for his absence in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Keep that sense of humour, Stan!
I have a funny theory about it. It also could be they [producers] didn’t want me to do the cameo because, without my cameo, the movie will make more money. You see, somebody watches the movie and the movie ends and the person says, ‘Wow, I didn’t see Stan’s cameo. I must have missed it.’ So what do they do? Right back to the box office, buy another ticket, and watch the movie again. So I think it’s a big moneymaking ploy on the part of the producers.
