The much anticipated reboot of 1987’s RoboCop is set for a February 2014 release, but for now we have got the first trailer of the movie! The different looking uniform of RoboCop has led to much talk on the web, with some die-hard fans slashing at it mercilessly, while others more open to the change. Then there are those who do not want the memories of the 1987 classic flick diluted by reboots, while others can’t wait for the next RoboCop movie after two decades (last movie of the franchise came out in 1993). Amidst the din, the new RoboCop is all set to make its entry… and we can expect it to be with a bit of style.
What’s the plot like: “In the film, the year is 2028 and multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the center of robot technology. Their drones are winning American wars around the globe and now they want to bring this technology to the home front. Alex Murphy is a loving husband, father and good cop doing his best to stem the tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After he is critically injured in the line of duty, OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to the streets of his beloved city with amazing new abilities, but with issues a regular man has never had to face before.”
Who is playing the lead role: The role that Peter Weller immortalized in the past would be taken over by Swedish-American actor Joel Kinnaman in the reboot. Kinnaman has starred in the likes of Safe House and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo but one would hardly remember him from those movies. He is best known for playing the lead role in the Swedish film Easy Money. But in Hollywood, the role of RoboCop could be the one to open new doors for Kinnaman.
Anyone else in the cast to be excited about: Take your pick from Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Jackie Earle Haley and Samuel L. Jackson. Those are big names, lending solid credibility to the movie. And we also have Abbie Cornish playing the female lead.
What about the director: The actor has a Swedish touch, the director has a Brazilian one. José Padilha is the man who brought two of the greatest hits of Brazilian cinema, Elite Squad and its sequel, Elite Squad: The Enemy Within. If you haven’t watched these movies, they are highly recommended! If Padilha manages to pull off something with the pace and intensity of either of the Elite Squad movies, then we are in for a treat…
Anything else one should know: Remember the original RoboCop is considered a classic film. It spawned a franchise that had two sequels, animated TV series, a television mini-series, video games etc etc. It has been praised by critics and audience alike. It won the Academy Award for Sound Effects Editing. It has been placed on the ‘Great Movie’ lists innumerable times; appears at #14 in the action movie category by Entertainment Weekly in 2007, features in The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time selected by Empire magazine in 2008, features in The Best 1000 Movies Ever Made by The New York Times. So the latest reboot has a lot to live upto. Well, February 2014 is not too far away to find that out.
