After the success of the likes of Twilight series and The Hunger Games franchise, many would have expected the so-called Young-Adult (YA) genre to dominate the box-office. They did arrive in numbers, as each studio want scouting for the next big YA franchise, but only a few have managed to survive the tough box-office race to develop into a franchise. Last year’s The Maze Runner is one such film. 20th Century Fox smartly developed an enjoyable action-filled movie in just $34 million, such that its $340 million worldwide collection at the box-office turned it into a massive hit for the studio. It was a no-brainer then that the book series would get a movie trilogy. So here we are, a few months away from the release of the sequel Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials which will be followed up with Maze Runner: The Death Cure in 2017.
What’s the plot about: Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is based on the second novel of the series written by James Dashner. The story follows Thomas and his fellow Gladers who escaped the ‘Maze’ in the first movie, and will now have to journey through a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles called the ‘Scorch’. At the same time, they have to make sense of the reasons behind the dystopian world and the secrets of the organization called WCKD.
Who’s in the cast: Dylan O’Brien returns to reprise the lead role of Thomas along with his fellow survivors of the previous movie including Kaya Scodelario as Teresa Agnes. The new actors cast in the movie include Aidan Gillen who is popular as Petyr Baelish in Game of Thrones TV series.
Who’s directing the movie: Wes Ball returns behind the cameras once again. He had made his directorial debut with The Maze Runner, and having put together a financially successful and entertaining film, there is little reason to look anywhere else.
Where to watch the trailer: Right here! It’s an explosive trailer, packed with a lot of tension as well as action sequences that remind us of the reasons behind the success of the first movie. Hopefully the movie would be as thrilling as the trailer!
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is scheduled to release in the USA on September 18, 2015.
