There is no charge for awesomeness… or attractiveness.
Right? The lesson that Po the Panda taught us back in 2008, holds true even seven years later. A bumbling buffoon of a panda, whose love for kung fu landed him at the doorsteps of Master Shifu, turned out to be the Chosen One. Over the course of two movies, he defeated big foes, made amazing friends, and learnt a lot of kung fu. He has entertained us, made us laugh, made us smile, made us feel warm inside. Both the movies of the franchise from DreamWorks Animation have been full of mirth, adventure, and, oh yes, awesomeness. So a third movie is always welcome!
The financial difficulties that has plagued DreamWorks Animation in recent years is no secret. The studio has not had enough big hits, and the ballooning costs and lack of quality movies has impacted its bottomline. That is why Kung Fu Panda 3 is so much more than just another franchise movie. It is one of those few movies of DreamWorks Animation that has enough good-will to get solid box-office earnings, which can then take care of a couple duds that come too regularly for the studio. Last year How to Train Your Dragon 2 did fantastic business for DreamWorks Animation, and along with that one, the Kung Fu Panda series is the only other live franchise that the studio has to bank on. The Croods has a sequel in the works, but we are yet to judge it. So the importance of Kung Fu Panda 3 turning out to be good and making a lot of money for the studio, cannot be reiterated enough.
The first trailer for Kung Fu Panda 3 has been released, and it brings back the joy of watching these animals carry out their kung fu moves. This one is more like a teaser trailer, but we get a good enough glimpse of the ‘Furious Five’ along with the adorable Po serving Master Shifu. The trailer also gives a sneak into the main storyline of the film, which has to do with Po’s past. If you remember, Kung Fu Panda 2 had ended with a shot of a panda community living somewhere in a far-off village, and amongst them was Po’s panda father. Now the father is in search of his son, and as you will see in the trailer they do meet, but not quite!
We have Jack Black returning to voice Po; we cannot imagine anyone else! The rest of the cast is the same, which includes Angelina Jolie (Tigress), Jackie Chan (Monkey), Seth Rogen (Mantis), Lucy Liu (Viper), Dustin Hoffman (Shifu) and David Cross (Crane). Among the new entrants are Bryan Cranston voicing Po’s father, Rebel Wilson and J.K. Simmons. That is a good group of voices that we are going to get to hear.
Jennifer Yuh, who had directed Kung Fu Panda 2, is once again seated in the director’s chair. This time she is sharing it with Alessandro Carloni who has been in the animation department for DreamWorks Animation for a long time now. The screenplay has been written by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger who have worked on both the previous movies of the franchise.
The first trailer of Kung Fu Panda 3 looks appetizing. And hopefully things will click for DreamWorks Animation. Enjoy the trailer here!
Kung Fu Panda 3 is scheduled to release in the USA on January 29, 2016.
