Do we trust in Johnny Depp anymore? I would not be surprised if you were to quickly blurt out ‘No’. His string of flops have continued till this year’s Mortdecai where his own performance can be termed nothing else but abysmal. So I will be a bit hesitant before recommending a Johnny Depp movie to anyone. But is that great actor still buried within him, waiting to be uncovered again? The upcoming gangster flick Black Mass will answer our question in a few months’ time.
Plot: Black Mass is a biopic about Whitey Bulger, the brother of a state senator and one of the most infamous violent criminals in the history of South Boston, who would later on became an FBI informant.
Johnny Depp: Going by the first teasers revealed by Warner Bros., Black Mass could revitalize Johnny Depp’s sagging career. The initial teasers have been all about Johnny Depp (you can check out the latest one below), showing his character’s ruthlessness as well as his dark sense of humour. More importantly, it shows Depp in a transformed avatar, a much needed one too, which is a far cry from the roles he played in The Lone Ranger, Transcendence and Mortdecai. While one should not judge a performance by the trailers alone, I will still say that Depp is looking absolutely fantastic in Black Mass, and fingers crossed, that he brings back the magic of old. Depp is not unfamiliar to gangster movies remember, having played an FBI undercover agent in Donnie Brasco, a cocaine druglord in Blow, and notorious gangster John Dillinger in Public Enemies, each one a biopic, each one earning plaudits for Depp’s performance. Let’s hope that Black Mass gets added to that list!
Other cast members: Benedict Cumberbatch. That is a name which should get a whole new section of the audience to the theatre. Little has been shown of this stellar actor in the trailers, but expect him to be at his best in the role of Whitey Bulger’s senator brother. Joel Edgerton brings further quality to the acting crew, and he plays the FBI agent in the movie. Black Mass also stars Kevin Bacon, Juno Temple and Dakota Johnson. Not bad at all!
Director: Scott Cooper is still fairly young in the directing world, with only two movies shot before Black Mass. But he has worked on serious-toned tough flicks, and with big acting names like Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart and Christian Bale in Out of the Furnace. It’s a big opportunity for Cooper as well to cement his name further in Hollywood if he turns out to be the one who resurrects Johnny Depp’s career.
Trailer: The latest teaser trailer for the movie can be watched right here! The mix of dark humour and violence gives the film a strong personality and the teaser will leave you wanting to know more.
Black Mass is scheduled to release in the USA on September 18, 2015.
