It seems there may not be the traditional three-year gap for us to see the next George Clooney directed film. At least he’s already zeroed in on the project that he’ll work on next. This one would be the movie adaptation of the book Hack Attack which has been written by journalist Nick Davies and goes in detail on the British phone hacking scandal which rocked the very core of Rupert Murdoch’s news empire, bringing an end to the 168-year history of the publication ‘News of the World’ in 2011. This would be a high-stakes story filled with drama and tension as well as thrill, while also showcasing the extent to which moral depravity is seeping into our society. As Clooney says,
This has all the elements – lying, corruption, blackmail – at the highest levels of government by the biggest newspaper in London. And the fact that it’s true is the best part. Nick is a brave and stubborn reporter and we consider it an honor to put his book to film.
Well, we too are happy with the project taken up by Clooney. Over the five films that he has directed, George Clooney has emerged the best when taking on a serious theme which revolves around professional hazards, where power and corruption go hand-in-hand. For me, his best works were Good Night, and Good Luck which was powerful and artistic in its depiction of courageous journalism and focused heavily on media responsibility, and Ides of March which dealt with the filth of politics and its power struggles. Clooney appeared on screen for both the films, though for his upcoming project it seems that he is going to move completely behind the cameras. That would be a first for Clooney who has acted in each of his directed films, and played the central character in his most recent venture The Monuments Men. It may very well be that Clooney wants to focus purely on the directing work for his next feature film, which goes to show how seriously he’s taking his directorial duties. The absence of the distraction from acting may just land us a masterpiece, we hope!
In case you did not know, George Clooney’s closeness to journalism begins from home. His father, Nick Clooney has had a long stint in the world of journalism and has also been a television host in the past. You know now who George Clooney would call to get a better insight into something for his new movie! There is a lot of work to be done though. A script would have to be written (I guess Clooney is likely to work on that too), actors need to be cast, before shooting can begin. If things move promptly, we could see a 2016 release for this project. Clooney himself is quite busy on the acting front. He has Brad Bird’s movie Tomorrowland set for a 2015 release, though this one is in post-production now. He is also attached with the next Coen brothers film Hail, Caesar! and the Jodie Foster thriller Money Monster both of which are scheduled for a 2015 release. He’s likely to begin work on the Hack Attack movie after his work on the other films are done, so that push things a bit, but a late 2016 release seems quite plausible. Else we move to 2017, and back to the three-year gap between George Clooney directed flicks. If that turns out to be the case, then it better be worth the wait!
