First trailer of Pixels has a nostalgic value

If you are of a certain age (which may very well be 25 and above), then you would love a little dose of nostalgia now and then. Hollywood has put this factor into good use in the past, and will attempt it again with the upcoming movie Pixels. The tricky part of evoking nostalgia is that you need to get it right with the right amount of doses, for if you goof around with people’s sentiments then the backlash would be worse than what a bad movie would otherwise have received. The first trailer of Pixels seems to give the right vibe, and a bit of hope that the otherwise outlandish comedy movie may very well pass the test. Good luck, Pixels.

What’s the movie about: This one brings forth the age-old alien invasion tale, but with some originality mixed with goofiness. In this movie, extraterrestrial forces misinterpret old school arcade games as a declaration of war, and so attack Earth in the form of video games. The President of the USA calls upon his childhood friend, an ’80s game champion, to help fight off the invading forces. Strange but interesting, right?

Who’s directing the movie: A not so unfamiliar name, Christopher Columbus. He has worked on quite a few fantasy-themed films such as the first two Harry Potter movies and the second film of the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series. Even his other movies are usually meant for family viewing, that have a feel-good theme, and even if they aren’t spectacular, they are not cringe-worthy either.

Who’s in the star cast:  Alright, they may not be the names you would want to hear right now, but do bear with me. Kevin James is playing the US President and Adam Sandler is the gaming champion. These two names might put a lot of people off, considering the kind of lame movies they have been part of in recent times, but Pixels looks to be a movie which would be bigger than its cast, and so it might just work. The visual effects, the nostalgia of seeing some old arcade games come to life, those might negate the annoyance of seeing these two comedians who have lost their path. And who knows, maybe Chris Columbus can get them to be funny again. The cast also includes Michelle Monaghan, Peter Dinklage and Sean Bean; that is a lot of good talent right here!

What about the nostalgia: Oh, yeah. If you have ever played the arcade games that shot to fame in the 1980s, or any version of them, then you are going to love seeing some of them appear on the big screen in huge forms with a lot of colour on their skin. Get ready for Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Frogger, and Centipede, to name a few!

Where to watch the trailer: Right here! It’s a good glimpse to the kind of fun this movie could be. We just hope now that the trailer ain’t just the best part.

Pixels is scheduled to release in the USA on July 24, 2015.
