We haven’t had a chance to watch Inside Out yet, and Pixar is already whetting our appetite for more by giving us a first look at its upcoming The Good Dinosaur. This movie has seen some serious delays in the past, as it started out as the supposed vehicle for Up co-director Bob Peterson‘s solo directorial debut, before Pixar’s top management chose to go in another direction and handed over the project to Peter Sohn. We will be judging the final product as we approach the end of the year, and make no mistake, it would be judged minutely with some of the other Pixar greats. But first, know the story behind The Good Dinosaur.
“The Good Dinosaur” asks the generations-old question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? In theaters November 25, 2015, the film is a humorous and exciting original story about Arlo, a lively Apatosaurus with a big heart. After a traumatic event unsettles Arlo’s family, he sets out on a remarkable journey, gaining an unlikely companion along the way – a human boy. “The Good Dinosaur” is an extraordinary journey of self-discovery full of thrilling adventure, hilarious characters and poignant heart.
That’s the official synopsis, but the premise does in fact sound interesting. Interaction between dinosaurs and humans have not really been of a ‘friendly’ kind as the soon to be released Jurassic World will tell us, but Pixar is attempting to create something different here, by showcasing an extinct and dangerous creature as a friendlier one. Pixar has made us fall in love with a child’s toys, shown us to admire a rat’s cooking abilities, taught us the trick behind flying homes, so it ain’t impossible for the studio to make us feel like snuggling upto a dinosaur. The first poster of the movie also has a child-drawn kind of dinosaur, in sharp contrast to the snarling creatures that Steven Spielberg made famous two decades back. Have a look at the first poster below.
Peter Sohn, a Korean-American, would be the first non-white to serve as a director on a Pixar movie. Even though The Good Dinosaur is going to be his directorial debut, he has been working at Pixar for a long time, mainly in the art department as well as providing voices to characters in Pixar movies. This is a great jump for Sohn, and could be the beginning of bigger things to come. The movie has Lucas Neff voicing the lead character Arlo’s voice, along with the voices of Judy Greer, Neil Patrick Harris and John Lithgrow.
Pixar has released the first look for the film. It is a short teaser, which has a nice feel-good factor about it, which may be the direction the studio has chosen for the movie. The dinosaurs themselves have been drawn out in a more cartoon-like manner, rather than keeping them closer to the ones we have seen in Jurassic Park. This seems to be a sign of the kind of movie The Good Dinosaur would be – more joyous and fun-filled. And an adventure of course! No Pixar film is bereft of an adventure worth remembering. Enjoy the first teaser trailer for now, though stay updated for the first full-length trailer which would throw more light on the movie.
The Good Dinosaur is scheduled to release in the USA on November 25, 2015.
