As Phase 2 of Marvel’s Avengers program sets to move into deeper waters with the imminent release of Thor: The Dark World, Marvel delights us with something more. The first trailer of Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
What is the plot of this sequel: The plot in brief goes something like this, “Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and teams up with Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, to battle a powerful yet shadowy enemy in present-day Washington, D.C.” Ok, so there is no surprise that a bit about Captain America coming to terms with the modern day world would form part of the movie; it was even brought up in Avengers now and then. The real exciting part seems to be the tie-up of Captain America and Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson). We saw Black Widow with Iron Man in Iron Man 2, we then saw her persuade the Hulk to join the superhero group in Avengers and now she’s teaming up with Captain America. The numerous characters in this Marvel universe and the interactions of the different personalities is something that really lights up the movies of this franchise.
Who is the Winter Soldier: There are no spoilers here, for the identity of Winter Soldier is known in the comics, and has already been confirmed during the development of the movie. Yet, if you aren’t well-versed with this fact and wish to uncover it during the movie, then you may skip this paragraph. For others, Winter Soldier is, just like in the comics, Captain America’s best friend from the first movie, James “Bucky” Barnes. In the comics, Bucky suffers brain damage after a plane explosion which results in amnesia. The Soviets find him with a missing arm; they provide him with a bionic arm and train him to be a Soviet assassin under code name Winter Soldier. In the first movie Captain America: The First Avenger, Bucky is presumably killed when he falls off a moving train over a cliff. Well now we know that he is all set to return in the sequel, but how much of the origins of the character will match the storyline of the comics, will be known only later. The character will be once again portrayed by Sebastian Stan, and the trailer does make the Winter Soldier look amazingly cool!
Are there are any further new characters in this movie: Marvel does keep introducing newer and newer characters with each movie, increasing the universe further, and definitely making it all the more interesting. So apart from the obvious presence of Chris Evans, Scarlett Johannson and Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury, there is the commanding presence of Robert Redford gracing this movie. The first movie had stalwarts like Tommy Lee Jones and Hugo Weaving, so their absence in the sequel had to be met with someone equally imposing and fun to watch. Redford fits the bill comfortably, and the trailer has a lot of Redford in it which probably gives an indication that the Oscar winner would be having an impactful role to play here. Redford’s character, Alexander Pierce, is a senior leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a comrade of Nick Fury. The movie also has Anthony Mackie playing the role of superhero Falcon, who in the comics is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who can fly and speak telepathically with birds. Those are some really interesting powers to have! But the trailer does not focus much on Falcon yet; maybe the future trailers would give away a bit more.
Who’s directing the movie: The Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe Russo, who replace Joe Johnston, the director of the first film. The Russo brothers do not have much of a track record in film directing, their last movie being 2006’s You, Me and Dupree. But they are an established unit in the TV world having won an Emmy too for their direction work on the show Arrested Development. This is quite a big transition for them, moving to a high-budget high-expectation movie, and hopefully they will weave the action required in the film around an emotionally connecting storyline.
Where do we watch the trailer: Right here! The trailer is filled with loads of action sequences, revealing little about the movie plot, but it also has quite a bit of Robert Redford and Samuel Jackson, which we aren’t complaining about. The Winter Soldier makes a late entry in the trailer but a stylish one, and the fight between Captain America and Winter Soldier would surely be the highlight of the film. Enjoy the trailer for now!
