Disney’s Cinderella debuts trailer

The fairytales are coming to the big screen thick and fast. Disney scored big this year with Maleficent and has planned to recreate another one of its classics, Cinderella, for 2015. The 1950 animated musical is getting a live-action makeover, and a chance to see whether the old tale still has the magic to catch a new audience.

What’s the plot: You know it already! Judging by the trailer, the movie does not seem to have tinkered much with the storyline which is sort of disappointing. But the director did mention in an interview that “we get to refresh, reactive and recreate Cinderella from the inside out”; so hopefully there is some new angle to the whole story of a young girl living with her cruel stepmother who becomes the heartthrob of a prince. And there is a glass slipper in this somewhere.

Who’s directing the film: Kenneth Branagh is seated in the director’s chair for this one. His last directorial work was this year’s Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit in which he played the villain too. More notably, Branagh has worked with Disney before on 2011’s Thor, and so we could hope for a similar successful partnership again.

Who are the lead actors: Young actress Lily James (from Downtown Abbey TV series) is playing the titular character. This is quite a big platform for the actress to break into mainstream Hollywood. Then we have two veterans in the form of Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother and Helena Bonham Carter as the fairy godmother. They are bound to add so much quality to the movie, aren’t they? Hayley Atwell will be seen as Cinderella’s mother and Richard Madden is, who else but Prince Charming.

Where to watch the trailer: Right here! The trailer is visually wonderful, though seems to narrate a good part of the story. Or maybe there is more to this tale than the one we already know of. We will know soon. Enjoy the trailer!

Cinderella is scheduled to release in the USA on March 13, 2015.
