It is a bit strange for a film releasing in the summer period to showcase its first trailer just a month prior to its theatrical release. In fact, I checked and re-checked whether such was the case for this film, and weirdly it is. The filmmakers of Chef did leave it till quite late for the audience to get a feel of the movie which is coming out in May 2014. It may have to do with the fact that the film is not a big studio flick, rather has an indie-touch to it being produced by Aldamisa Entertainment (Devil’s Pass, Machete Kills). It is being distributed by Open Road Films. Nonetheless, here we have it, the first trailer for Chef.
What’s the film about: As the trailer displays so amply, this movie should be one for the foodies. And possibly for the optimists and dreamers too. Chef is the story of a chef (you didn’t see that coming, did you?) who loses his restaurant job and so starts up a food truck to make dishes that he would love to make, while trying to work on his personal life too.
Who is directing the film: Not only has he directed the film, but also written and starred in it. Jon Favreau. His last three directed theatrical films were big budget flicks, Iron Man, Iron Man 2 and Cowboys & Aliens. He did decide to step away from directing the next Iron Man film, and has moved to something of a lower profile but which would test his directing skills in another fashion. It kind of seems thematic to the plot of the film Chef itself, but I am sure that Favreau would have had things going better for him than his movie’s character. Favreau is also playing the lead role in the film, and while he has featured in numerous movies so far, a lead role has been rare, which makes this all the more interesting.
Who are the other cast members: There are two big stars from Iron Man 2 in this movie. Scarlett Johansson who has already dazzled on the big screen recently in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is going to play the role of Favreau’s love interest in Chef. Robert Downey, Jr. also features in the film, though it seems from the trailer, that it could well be a limited role. Dustin Hoffman is another big-shot actor featuring in the film, though that too could well be a brief appearance. Sofia Vergara plays the ex-wife and John Leguizamo seems to be giving a helping hand to Favreau’s character.
Where to watch the trailer: Right here! If nothing else, the trailer would make you salivate; and if it does remind you a bit of Ratatouille, then you aren’t the only one!
Chef releases in the USA on May 9, 2014.
